Fantasy Football Origins:

Fantasy sports have been around since at least the 1950’s. Originally, it was  just friends making up scoring rules for major league baseball players. The first formalized rotisserie league was formed in 1980 in New York City. A set of rules was drawn up and a bunch of friends got together at a restaurant, named La Rotisserie Française weekly to play the game. (It is the origin of the word rotisserie in sports gaming, cool huh?). The league’s original purpose was to compete against your friends in a fun way to demonstrate and brag that you could do a better job than the real baseball general managers who actually held those roles in MLB.

During the baseball strike of 1981, many rotisserie players jumped to football for the first time to continue playing the game they loved, just with a different sport. In 1987 the first fantasy football magazine Fantasy Football Index was launched.

The 1990’s brought the first internet based online management games, noticeably changing the game forever by allowing easy online access and less manual effort than ever before so users could play remotely in leagues with friends or colleagues. 

You know, if you are still reading this far, that fantasy football exploded in the aughts and teens of the 21st century. More than 29 MILLION people play a version of the game each year. It is a $3+ BILLION DOLLAR market.

The first big players in the new gaming arena in the late nineties’ early aughts were companies like ESPN, CBS Sports, and Yahoo!  They are still the market leaders today and none offer a dynasty auction (DA) compatible online fantasy football game. 

All DA fantasy football leagues in 2024 require manual workarounds to play effectively. They are still fun to play, but the work effort is high, manual and became one of our company goals – Play More, Work Less.

Fantasy Football Future:

Every season, NFL GM’s manage franchise rosters against a salary cap and sign players to contracts by out spending their fellow league owners for quality players. These players are signed to multiple year contracts. All these NFL GM challenges are found in Dafffy’s next gen fantasy football game and not in ESPN, CBSSports or Yahoo
